E-mail Concerning Threats and Extortion

Between December 7, 2006 and January 9, 2007, the FBI issued warnings regarding an e-mail scam. The e-mails claimed that the sender had been hired to kill the recipient. However, if the recipient was willing pay, to the sender, a sum larger than the original contract price, the "hit" would be cancelled. A new development now shows that the e-mails have been improvised to give the appearance that the sender is the FBI in London. These e-mails note that law officials have arrested a suspect for the murders of several individuals in the US as well as the UK, with a direct reference to the first e-mail. It is then indicated that personal information about the recipient was found in the subject’s possession, identifying the recipient as the next victim. This scam could compromise one’s personal information if response to this unsolicited e-mail is made. Due to the nature of the e-mail, which insinuates violence, IC3 is requesting that anyone receiving an e-mail of this nature please contact the police and file a complaint at www.ic3.gov
