Columbia, MD: June 6, 2011-The National Association of Credit Management (NACM) and Robert Half Finance & Accounting and Accountemps honored Shane Norman, CCE of Las Vegas, Nevada, as the 2011 NACM/Robert Half Finance & Accounting and Accountemps Student of the Year during the association's 115th Annual Credit Congress and Exposition, held in Nashville, Tennessee, May 22-25.
Pursuing professional development in a post-recession landscape is a fraught task. For Shane Norman, the 2011 Student of the Year, attending NACM's two-year executive-level Graduate School of Credit and Financial Management (GSCFM), held on the campus of Dartmouth College, meant initially financing the first year of classes on his own. With the second year approaching, Mr. Norman found himself facing a shortfall. Rather than postponing his goal to complete the GSCFM and attain the Certified Credit Executive (CCE) designation, Mr. Norman reached out for assistance. It was an extraordinary effort that led Mr. Norman to approaching the Credit Executives and Educational Foundation (CEEF) of his NACM Affiliate, Credit Management Association (CMA) of Burbank, California, for financial help.
Despite having already awarded its scholarship funds for the year, the Foundation recognized Mr. Norman's "commitment to achieving the highest level of professional designation in business credit." With CEEF's $4,000 scholarship in hand, plus a partial scholarship from the Nevada Institute of Credit, Mr. Norman successfully completed his second year at GSCFM and earned his CCE designation.
"I believe the education I have received has helped me to keep my job (despite significant layoffs), by saving our company millions of dollars in losses and significantly improving cash flow resources. I can't attribute that to only [GSCFM], but I can attribute it to my resolve to continue with the education I have received thus far in my career," Mr. Norman explained in correspondence to CEEF.
Mr. Norman currently serves as the credit manager for Cashman Equipment Company, which is a Caterpillar equipment dealer providing all things Caterpillar to the state of Nevada and several counties in California. Cashman Equipment is based in Henderson and, with its proximity to Las Vegas, has weathered the after-effects of the 2008 downturn. During his more than five-year tenure, Mr. Norman has been "instrumental in improving A/R turnover while minimizing the risk of uncollectibles," noted Cashman CFO James Moore.
In addition to his professional responsibilities, Mr. Norman is an approved certified instructor for NACM's Advanced Credit Administration Program and has been a guest speaker on lien-related topics to construction-related industry credit groups. He is also a current member of the CMA Nevada Board of Governors.
The National Association of Credit Management warmly congratulates Mr. Norman on being honored as the 2011 Student of the Year.
