Before a holder can report and remit unclaimed property to the state of the owner's last known address, very specific due diligence requirements must be fulfilled. Most states require that the holder attempt to contact the owners to give them one last opportunity to claim the property before it is turned over to a state unclaimed property office.

In that each state has its own due diligence requirements, performing effective due diligence which adheres to all the states' various requirements can be challenging. This teleconference will include an overview of state due diligence requirements, tips on performing effective due diligence and methods by which you can reduce the number of unclaimed items requiring due diligence.


Maureen Ferrari
Vice President of Operations, Keane Unclaimed Property

Maureen Ferrari brings 18 years of experience in unclaimed property to Keane where she now serves as Vice President of Operations. Her expertise in unclaimed property encompasses compliance and education, claims processing, customer service and call center operations, newspaper advertising, and media relations. Ms. Ferrari has spoken nationally on the subject of unclaimed property reporting, efficiencies in claims processing, owner outreach, and newspaper advertising campaigns. During her tenure as Division Manager for Claims at the Pennsylvania Unclaimed Property Bureau, her operation was presented with a national award for efficient claims processing.

As the former Assistant Director and Chief of Staff for the Pennsylvania Treasury Department's Bureau of Unclaimed Property, Ms. Ferrari oversaw 88 employees in three locations and was responsible for education and compliance through business-to business marketing, seminars and webinars, as well as audits and voluntary compliance efforts. Prior to becoming the Assistant Director, Maureen served as Division Manager for Claims, Manager of Public Relations and Claims, and Manager of Customer Service and Public Outreach. She began her career as a caseworker for Northumberland County's Children and Youth Services.

Barbara Rice
State Compliance Liaison, Keane Unclaimed Property

Barbara joined Keane's Consulting and Advisory Services team as a State Compliance Liaison in February 2013. She brings over 20 years of unique and diverse experience as a former state unclaimed property administrator.

Prior to joining Keane, Barbara served as an unclaimed property administrator for the state of South Carolina. Prior to working for the state of South Carolina, she served as the Deputy Director of the Ohio Department of Commerce with direct responsibility for the management of the unclaimed property program. Before joining state government, she was Vice President of The Clinton Oil Company, an Ohio independent oil and gas producer, and President of Clinton affiliate, LDC securities. Previous to her employment with Clinton, she was employed by The Ohio Company, a regional investment banking firm at which she held various management positions.

Barbara was also an active member of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) and was a frequently featured speaker, both locally and nationally, on the topic of unclaimed property. She was awarded the NAUPA Presidential Distinguished Services Award in 2000 and 2006 and the NAUPA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. Barbara received the Unclaimed Property Professionals Organization's (UPPO) Shining Star Award in 2005 and the UPPO Holder's Choice Above and Beyond Award in 2009 and 2012.
