Federal Agencies Are Going Green–er

Agencies are continuing to achieve their mandated green government goals that started under the Bush Administration and have continued under President Obama. Agencies have many regulations they must comply with to meet energy conservation and green government requirements, which include:

  • Under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, federal buildings must cut energy consumption 30%—relative to 2005—by 2015.
  • Under the Energy Policy Act of 2005, agencies must increase renewable energy by 7.5% annually by 2013.
  • By Obama's executive order, agencies are required to cut gasoline, potable and non-potable water consumption by 2% annually through 2020.

If you have a business that can help these agencies with their green efforts, this is the time to look for those federal acquisitions and start selling to the government.

The 2011 fiscal new year has begun. As the new financial year starts, vendors need to remember that ongoing relationships with their contracting officers is a must. Contracting officers offer a great deal of insight into the federal market. Make sure you are up-to-date on the latest federal mandates and agency initiatives relevant to your product, service or solution.

Social networking is a great way to strengthen relationships within the federal space. Many federal agencies offer open houses or road shows to vendors to help keep your company informed when the government decides how to spend its remaining resources.

Keeping your company memberships in industry associations like NACM-GBG allows for updates on dialogue between government and industry. It also allows you to visibly position your company and offers more partnering opportunities with agencies.
